IRIS 2.0: FBR’s Portal for Registration, Verifications and Tax Filing in Pakistan

If you’re a taxpayer in Pakistan, managing your tax obligations just got easier. Thanks to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and its upgraded IRIS 2.0 portal, individuals and businesses can now file returns, verify documents, and update their tax profiles from the comfort of home.

In this blog post, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about FBR’s IRIS 2.0, including how to check your active taxpayer status, submit income tax returns, and keep your profile information up to date in 2025.

What is FBR IRIS 2.0?

IRIS 2.0 is the official digital platform of FBR Pakistan designed to facilitate online interaction between taxpayers and the government. Whether you’re filing returns, making corrections, or checking payment status—IRIS 2.0 is your go-to platform for all tax-related tasks.

What can be done on IRIS 2.0

The FBR Portal, commonly known as Iris, is the primary online platform facilitating taxpayer interactions with the FBR. It offers a wide array of services:

  • Registration: Register as a new taxpayer or update existing registration details like addresses or business information.
  • Declaration (Tax Returns): File various tax returns electronically, including Income Tax (with forms tailored for Salary, Business, Simplified, Non-Residents, etc.), Sales Tax, and Statements of Assets/Liabilities (under the 2019 Ordinance).
  • Rectification: Correct errors or omissions in previously filed returns or declarations.
  • Appeals: Electronically file appeals against tax assessments or penalties.
  • Refunds: Apply for and track the status of tax refunds. Note: A linked bank account is required before applying for a refund.
  • DNFBP: Manage declarations related to Designated Non-Financial Businesses and Professions.
  • Withholding/Advance Tax: File quarterly statements and manage withholding and advance tax obligations.
  • Payments: Make secure online tax payments.
  • Invoice Management: Handle e-invoicing and manage invoices.
  • Other Systems: Access integrated systems like IRMS and MIS.

Active Taxpayer Status

  • Income Tax (ATL): Confirm if you are officially listed as an active taxpayer. Search using your CNIC, NTN, passport number, or registration/incorporation number.
  • Sales Tax (ATL): Verify your active status for sales tax purposes by entering your NTN or registration number.
  • AJK Active Taxpayer List: Residents of Azad Jammu & Kashmir can check their income tax status using their CNIC or NTN via this dedicated list.

Deeper Taxpayer Insights

  • Taxpayer Profile Inquiry: Gain a comprehensive view of your registered details, including businesses, tax regime, and assessment information, using your NTN or registration number.
  • Blacklisted Taxpayer List (Sales Tax): Check if a potential business partner is blacklisted for sales tax issues, promoting informed business decisions.

Verifying Certificates and Documents

  • Exemption Certificate: Confirm the authenticity of an exemption certificate by searching its number.
  • Notices/Orders Verification: Check the legitimacy of an FBR notice or order by entering its reference number or date.
  • POS Invoice Verification: Verify point-of-sale invoices by scanning the QR code or entering the invoice number to guard against forged receipts.
  • Property Certificate Verification (u/s 7E): Ensure the authenticity of property certificates issued under section 7E, crucial for property transactions.
  • Payment Verification (PSID/CPR): Confirm that your tax payments have been successfully processed by entering the Payment Slip ID (PSID) or Computerized Payment Receipt (CPR) number.

Filing Income Tax Return via Iris 2.0

  1. Login: Access the FBR Portal (Iris).
  2. Select Declaration: Navigate to the declaration section and choose the appropriate income tax return form.

Update Personal Details via the Iris 2.0

  1. Log in: Access your Iris account using your credentials.
  2. Navigate: Find the section dedicated to updating your profile information.
  3. Use Form 181 (Modification): Select this form to make changes.

Details You Can Modify Online in IRIS 2.0 are;

  • Mobile Number
  • Email Address
  • Personal/Residential Address
  • Business Address (if applicable)
  • Addition of Business Branches
  • Details of Legal Representative (under Section 87 of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001)
  • Bank Account Information (crucial for refunds)

The portal also includes features like an Inbox for FBR communications (also sent via email), a Draft section for saved work, an Outbox to track submissions, and Completed Tasks history, often with filters for easier navigation.
